A Journey Through Time: The Remarkable Story of the Browns and Their Cherished Destination, Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center

Bells Mill built in 1850's

Deep within the heart of Cleburne County, Alabama, nestled along the picturesque banks of the Tallapoosa River, lies a place where time seems to stand still. It's a place where history intertwines with family, community, and a profound love for the land. This is the remarkable story of the Brown family, the proud stewards of the Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center, and the captivating history that has shaped this cherished destination for generations.

A Tale of Family and Legacy

At the helm of this family-owned and operated haven are Lex and Robin Brown, two individuals whose roots run deep in the fertile soil of Cleburne County. They are the heart and soul of Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center, and their story is a testament to the enduring power of love and legacy.

A Journey Through Time

Lex's connection to this land spans generations. His father, Jerry Brown, born in 1943 in Cleburne County, and his grandfather, Joe Brown, born in 1897, have each played a pivotal role in shaping the legacy that now thrives along the riverbanks. Yet, it was his great-grandfather, John Alexander Brown, born in 1863 in Georgia, who initiated the family's journey by purchasing what was called Bells Mill from the Bell Family.

In 1890, John Alexander Brown moved to the land where Lex and Robin now reside. Back then, there was a grist mill on the property, which later evolved into a multifaceted establishment. The mill not only ground grains but also operated as a sawmill, producing electricity for the local community. This rich history still echoes through the campground, with the very site of the mill serving as the foundation for Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center.

The Bells Mill Era

Going even further back, the property's history is intertwined with the Bell family, who established the original mill in the 1850s. This historical connection gave rise to the community's name, Bells Mill. Unfortunately, the mill met a fiery end, destroyed by Union forces just a week after the Civil War's conclusion, a documented event in the war records. The Yankees even camped on the campground that fateful night, leaving an indelible mark on the land's history.

A Remarkable Family Heritage

The Browns' enduring commitment to the land, their community, and their family heritage shines brightly. Lex's great-grandfather's general store, built around 1915, still has a lasting presence in the form of Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Center's camp store. This site once served as a hub for goods, shipped via train from Atlanta's Grants Park to Heflin, AL. Lex's grandfather would embark on a daylong journey to Heflin, a trip that now takes just minutes, to retrieve these essential supplies. It's a testament to the strong work ethic and resourcefulness that runs through the family's veins.

Continuing the Tradition

Today, Lex and Robin are joined by their two children, the fifth generation to call this land home. The farm is now recognized as a "century and heritage farm," an acknowledgment of its century-old legacy and the family's unwavering dedication to preserving its heritage. The old historical photographs that will soon grace the camp store's walls bear witness to this remarkable journey through time.

A Beloved Community and Destination

The recent ribbon-cutting event, hosted by the Cleburne County Chamber of Commerce, showcased the deep bond between the Brown family and their community. The outpouring of congratulations and well-wishes from attendees painted a vivid picture of the affection and respect the community holds for Lex, Robin, and their family.

The Allure of the Tallapoosa Bass Ah, the call of the outdoors! There's something so captivating about the Tallapoosa River in Heflin, Alabama. It's not just the kayaking, hiking, or bird-watching that's attracting adventurers; it's a certain finned dweller—the elusive Tallapoosa Bass, often known as the Red Eye Bass. Found only in these waters, this unique fish has fast become the talk among anglers, nature enthusiasts, and guests at Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Adventure. Picture yourself in one of the cleanest rivers in the Eastern United States, with the Tallapoosa River as your backdrop. Small, upland streams lined with in-stream cover make it the perfect home for these distinctive bass. With dusky bars or blotches decorating its sides and a striking red eye that lends it its name, the Tallapoosa Bass offers more than just an angling challenge; it's a feast for the eyes. This is especially true during April to June when their already striking appearance takes on a vivid hue. Mastering the Art of the Catch Fishing is an art, and like any art form, timing is crucial. In this case, March to October marks the optimal period for seeking out the Tallapoosa Redeye Bass. But April to June deserves special mention. Imagine casting your line into the crystalline waters and pulling up a creature so colorful it seems painted by Mother Nature herself. What about lures, you ask? Well, given the Tallapoosa Bass's diverse diet of small terrestrial insects, baitfish, and crayfish, fly fishing is an effective approach. A plethora of trout flies would do the trick, although topwater poppers seem to be the local favorite. But these bass can be a finicky bunch. If they turn up their noses—or gills, in this case—at topwater, switching to a small streamer resembling a baitfish or crayfish can induce that gratifying tug on your line. Finding the Perfect Fishing Spot If you're pondering where to cast your line, look no further than the stretch of the Tallapoosa River that runs adjacent to the Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Adventure park. This section of the river offers an angler's dream landscape, with minimal paddling required and prime fishing spots at your doorstep. No need for lengthy trips or extensive planning—some of the river's most rewarding fishing spots are just a short walk away from your RV. Simply grab your gear, step out of your RV, and you're practically in fisherman's heaven. Level Up Your Experience with Local Guides Speaking of local tips, if you're looking to elevate your fishing experience, consider teaming up with East Alabama Fly Fishing. Their guides use raft-style drift boats to get you into those tucked-away fishing holes. More than just a watercraft, these drift boats offer a stable platform, letting you focus solely on your angling. You might be thinking that guided fishing sounds complicated, but it's remarkably straightforward—and all-inclusive. East Alabama Fly Fishing provides everything: food, water, and all the gear. Of course, if you have a favorite fishing rod, by all means, bring it along. The Convenience of Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Adventure The cherry on top? Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Adventure happens to be located right along this angler's paradise. Imagine waking up to the serenity of a riverside view from your RV, grabbing your fishing gear, and strolling to one of these prime fishing spots. It couldn't get more convenient than that! Reflecting on the Historic Waters As you cast your line into these historic waters—part of the larger Coosa River system—it's worth taking a moment to reflect on the history they've witnessed. From Native American roots to their role in the westward expansion of the United States, these waters are as steeped in history as they are rich in biodiversity. So there you have it—a complete guide to fishing for the unique Tallapoosa Bass, a species that's not just another fish but a symbol of the extraordinary biodiversity that the Tallapoosa and Coosa Rivers offer. With Tallapoosa River RV & Outdoor Adventure as your home base, you're well set to fish like the locals do and to explore this watery wonderland to your heart's content.
